Sandbach 58 - Old Aldwynnians 0 |
Sun 19 March 2000
After their fine performance away at Mold last week where they were narrowly beaten, Sandbach returned to Bradwall Road determined to turn their expansive rugby into a match winning performance.
Old Aldwynnians from Droyslden were the unwitting opponents who found themselves on the receiving end of one of Sandbach's best performances of the season to date.
Two early tries from set peice penalty moves five metres out by lock forward Dan Faulkner and flanker Matt Graveney set Sandbach on their way to what turned out to be a ten try romp.
Sandbach's forwards dominated throughout which enabled scrum half Tom Hodgkinson to release the fast running Sandbach back line at will.
The fourth try was without doubt the pick of the bunch. A good scrummage on the half way line and quick ball allowed centre Jason Ashwin to make 25 metres down the right wing before he was tackled. Flanker Tom Kiernan however was in close support. He won the ball, took it into a ruck situation which the Sandbach forwards quickly won. Tom Hodgkinson fed stand off Chris Greenhalgh who in turn fed centre Matt Walton for a crash ball run towards the posts. Walton however was held up just a metre from the line but Ashwin in close support scooped up the loose ball to dive over for a superb team try under the posts.
