Mold 12 - Sandbach 7 |
Sun 12 March 2000
Although beaten by 60 points to 31 by Mold only a month ago this Sandbach performance was in a different class. Mold could not have expected such a tough game as Sandbach put their hosts to the test on every occasion possible.
The game was marred by an early injury to Sandbach prop Neil Langford who needed a visit to hospital for stitches to a nasty head wound.
Sandbach scored first after 11 minutes through a fine break by centre Jason Ashwin - who later also had to leave the field due to a nasty cut above the eye. Ashwin broke through the Mold defence and after a fine run released winger Andy Rollings to touch down under the posts. Rollings converted.
Mold responded well and were level by the 15th minute. Sandbach fought back but Mold managed a further unconverted try before the half time break.
The second half was all Sandbach. Despite the loss of skipper Ashwin in the centre their defence was solid and their three quarters had the beating of the Mold opposite numbers in attack. However despite the pressure applied it was not to be !
Nevertheless this was one of Sandbach's finest performances this season.
Sandbach - Langford (Henry), Gooch, Lawrence (Taylor), Faulkner, Wagstaff, Caens (Graveney), Kiernan, Stubbs, Hodgkinson, Greenhalgh, Ashwin, Walton, Huss, Rollings, Eyers
