Colwyn Bay 21 - Sandbach 45 |
Sat 8 April 2000
This event was this season's (by now notorious) short-tour. Everyone managed to
arrive via the scenic route and the match took place, as scheduled, 10 minutes late.
Sandbach started with a sense of urgency, putting constant pressure on Colwyn for
the first 10 minutes. This pressure was not converted, however, the only score
being a nerve-calming penalty-goal. Each side then swapped tries (two apiece) and
the first half finished with honors just about even. The second half saw Sandbach
in a much more determined mood. This probably explains why they conceded a try
virtually from the kick-off. Confidence unshaken, they started to beat a road to
recovery, scoring four more tries in the process and finally cracking Colwyn's
resistance. The match was enjoyed by all concerned, particularly the victors, who
then looked forward to night of debauchery and gay abandon in Llandudno, the Soho of
the North-Wales Coast. The traditionalists among you will be pleased to know that
Chris Hughes belatedly bought a jug to mark the scoring of a hat-trick in the Crewe
match.
