Sandbach 0 - Chester 12

Sun 1 February 2004

U14's Narrowly Defeated Again.

On what started off as a bright sunny morning, Sandbach took on the reigning Cheshire Champions at this age group.

The game started brightly for Sandbach as they advanced up to the 22 and won a scrum. The backs took the ball wide and Matt Smith (Fly Half) kicked through forcing Chester to concede a 5 mtr scrum.
Chester spent a couple of minutes defending on their try line before kicking out from their goal area, Sandbach failed to collect the kick which was hacked on for the Chester winger to pick up and outpace the chasing defenders to score under the sticks, converting the try himself in off the post.

So twice in the space of two matches Sandbach conceding a soft early score.
The restart saw Sandbach attacking again, with the forwards not letting Chester settle, winning scrums and moving ahead, the backs moved the ball across the field and kicked through. However, Chester (with the wind and slope) twice kicked out to half way and after the second kick the Chester left wing broke free again and was stopped just short of the line. After some scrambling defence, the Sandbach backs ran the ball from under their own posts, grubbed the ball forwards and won a penalty at 30 mtrs. The backs ran the ball again and released Adam Colvin (Wing) who was stopped short. The rest of the period was Sandbach pressure between halfway and the 22 but with no penetration. The last move of the half saw Brendan Bache (Wing) released, but he was stopped at 5 metres and Chester kicked to touch to end the half.

With the weather fast fading to a cold and grey day, Sandbach had a slight wind advantage as Chester restarted with a massive kick and stopped the return at the Sandbach 22. From the scrum the Sandbach backs moved the ball across the field at pace, finally being bundled into touch at half way. We won the lineout, a scrum and were then given a penalty inside the Chester half. The backs ran the ball down the line, released Adam Colvin on the wing who touched down, but was adjudged to have made a double movement. Chester kicked out but the backs came straight back at them, being stopped just short of the line. Chester again kicked to clear and Sandbach moved forward and across the field again being held at about 5 mtrs. Chester withstood the Sandbach pressure, and started a slow movement upfield, putting the Sandbach defence under some strain. The Sandbach forwards drove Chester back to the 22 but then Chester won the ball in a maul, passed down the line for one of the centres to break through to score. The last ten minutes were all about Sandbach in the Chester half, exerting pressure but without scoring points, the closest chance being a forward drive that was stopped at 5 metres out.

The second row pair of Adam Wakefield and Tom Holmes again had fine games and Adam Colvin showed some of his blistering pace, nearly scoring on a couple of occasions.

Overall Sandbach put in a huge effort, and their commitment was plain to see. They attacked well and created chances but had failed to convert pressure into points for the second week in a row. Each time they came close to scoring they were just one step or one pass short. At times the defensive line was a little ragged and perhaps Sandbach could have been a little quicker off the mark to disrupt the opposition.

So, after being unbeaten in over a year, the U14’s have suffered two defeats in two weeks. Next week the U14 ‘A’ Team travel to Ellesmere Port, hopefully to restore some of our injured pride!
