cheshire cup 0 - Sandbach 0

Sun 14 March 2004

Sandbach the defending champions went out in the semi-finals to last seasons runners up Altincham Kersal.

Sandbach started their group games in mesmorising form, with a 40-0 win over the home side Old Anselmians, with a hat-trick of tries from hooker Rory Toft, with the other scores coming from Nicky Weaver, Jacques Jervis, Thomas Hutchinson, Oliver Moore, and George Hopley.

A win in the 2nd game against Crewe and Nantwich, would see Sandbach through to the quarter-finals. Sandbach decided to forget their game plan, and reverted to trying to match that of their opposition, by driving the ball up the middle instead of utilising the width of the pitch and getting the ball out wide. With the halftime score at 0-0, the interval was used to good effect. Sandbach came out a different team, and pinned Crewe and Nantwich to their own try line. Tries from centres Nicky Weaver and Oliver Moore gave Sandbach a 10-0 win.

In the quarter-final, Caldy presented tough opposition. It was evident that one try would be enough to seperrate the teams. Nicky Weaver broke the deadlock to put The Panthers through to the semi-final.

If scores were level in the knock-out, then the first team to score would go through. Sandbach quickly gained that advantage with a Oliver Moore try. Kersal hit back, however from the re-start, when one of their backs broke down the flank. With score still level mid way throught the 2nd half, Sandbach pressed to put the game beyond doubt. kersal however gained possession, and ' that back' broke way again to give Kersal the lead. With the referee calling last play, Sandbach came twice to within feet of the line only to be forced back, by a dogged Kersal defence, with the game ending 10-5 to Kersal.

Disappointed players, coaches, parents, and spectators, but all knowing that we did our best, and we have a team to be proud of. Special mention to substitute Thomas Blackhurst, who stood on the touchline for most of the tournament, and was ready and prepared when called upon in the second half of the semi-final.

Squad: Thomas Hutchinson, Max Menaged, Thomas Blackhurst, Oliver Moore, Ben Penfold, Jacques jervis, Nicky Weaver, Oliver Corbett, Elliot Barton, Rory Toft, George Hopley, Michael Vennard
