Sandbach 53 - Old Anselmians 17
Sun 28 September 2003
While the U14s were slugging it out at Caldy, the 'A's were entertaining Old Anselmians at Bradwall Road for our second 'double-header' of the season.
Anselmians kicked off down the slope and play moved between the 22's. After 5 minutes Adam Colvin (Outside Centre) put in a tackle and reacted first, picking up the spilled ball and breaking through the OA defence to score in the corner. There was then a ten minute period of sustained Old Anselmian pressure and Sandbach defence ending with OA scoring in the corner with a backs move from a 5 mtr scrum.
There was another 5 minutes of OA pressure before Sandbach drove to the halfway line, won a scrum and the backs ran the ball to 10 mtrs, another scrum and Tom Herd (Back Row) broke off and scored. Three minutes after the restart the OA Outside Centre broke from midfield, ran round
the defence and scored under the posts, converting the try to take the lead.
Sandbach counter attacked and got to 5 mtrs, OA drove back to halfway, Tom Herd broke through to 15 mtrs and from a penalty the backs ran the ball, Adam Colvin scoring and Matt Smith (Fly Half) converting.
Half time and Sandbach had regained the lead 17 - 12.
Straight from the restart Jack Leech (Inside Centre) stole the ball in a tackle, broke through, drew the defence and at 5 mtrs laid off for Andy Marrow (Fullback) to score. After another five minutes of pressure Sandbach got a penalty at 10 Mtrs, passed down the line for Adam Colvin to score under the posts, Matt Smith converting. There was 5 minutes of OA pressure in the Sandbach half before Matt Smiths defensive kick
and chase forced OA to touch down for a 5 mtr scrum. The backs passed down the line for Jack Leech to score under the posts, Matt Smith converting. From the restart the ball hovered around the Sandbach 22 for a couple of minutes eventually falling to Adam Colvin who broke through the line and ran round the defence to score under the posts, with another conversion from Matt Smith.
Sandbach then nodded off while OA attacked, breaking through to 15 mtrs, winning the ruck and passing down the line for the winger to score on the overlap. After a couple of minutes play in the middle, Jack Leech ripped the ball and drove to 5 mtrs before laying off to Matt Smith who burst through to score.
For the last five minutes play moved between the 22's, the last move of the match seeing the Sandbach backs breaking through and passing down the line for Adam Colvin to score again.
The match was keenly contested with the second half suffering from some lapses of discipline resulting in the referee speaking to some individuals and both teams.
Overall a very good display by the entire 18 man Sandbach squad, the most notable performance being Adam Colvin\rquote s 5 tries and four try saving cover tackles.
