Stoke Festival 0 - Sandbach 5

Sun 18 April 2004

With the 1st team also playing a tournament at Whitchurch, this was an opportunity for the developing squad members to gain valuable experience. Conditions were not good, with clay and rain making ponds, and the need to ensure that all players were able to swim before entering the field.

The opposition were strong with Caldy, Stoke, Newcastle, and Stafford all fielding their strongest teams. Sandbach had a squad of 14, and decided to rotate players and positions to give an equal share of the games.

Firstly Sandbach were up against Stoke, who played their effective forward orientated game, and despite losing 20-0 and being under pressure from the onset, remained focussed, and battled to the final whistle.

The game against Stafford was much more even, with a 5-0 defeat. Caldy had played some good free passing rugby, and Sandbach competed well, to keep the score to 10-0 to Caldy. Particular mention in a great team performance goes to Thomas Gould who when given a srum cap to wear developed into a 'tackling machine', and Jack Blackhurst in a new scrum half position.

In the final game against Newcastle was an exciting end to end encounter, with Sandbach demonstrating they could attack as well as defend. Elliot Morris and Charlee chambers provided the tries in what was a narrow 15-10 defeat.

The overall competition was jointly won by Stoke/Caldy who had equal points and try difference.

As for Sandbach, it was a performance to be proud of, with an excellent team spirit, in what were difficult conditions, and a day which was enjoyed by all.

SQUAD; George Cooper, Thomas Butler, Max Menaged, Elliot Morris, Charllotte Chambers, Thomas Gould, Jack Blackhurst, Thomas Blackhurst, Jack Cunnah, Daniel Williams, Henry Jones, Josh Spear, Lewis Jones.
