Sandbach 5 - Macclesfield 5

Sun 14 December 2003

This was a contest which could be compared with two heavyweight boxers, who were prepared to stand toe to toe in the middle of the ring, and slug it out with much courage and bravery, with both being prepared to soak up punishment, and neither being prepared to concede ground. Any space was quickly closed down, by quick and hard tackles from both sides. The deadlock was eventually broken when prop George Hopley tore the ball from a maul, and passed to fellow prop Rory Toft, who took the ball at speed to run unopposed throught the Macclesfied defence, who for once were caught flat footed. Macclesfield levelled the score, when despite valiant Sandbach defence the referee adjudged that the player had touched down prior to demolishing the touch flag.

The second half continued as the first, with neither side being able to create that extra necessary space to break down the defences, and the game ended all square in a deserved draw.

Macclesfield like Sandbach were able to field a second team, in what was a much more open game. Sandbach opened the scoring through Thomas Butler, and a second was scored by Elliot Morris folowing a pass from Daisy Benson. Charlee Chambers ran in a third following a diagonal run into the corner. Eliot Morris scored his second when he evaded his opposition having run from his own half of the pitch. Newcomer Nicky Weaver, in only his second game, and having already gained himself a reputation for his hard tackling, scored his first try of what will be many tries for the club to make the score 25-20 to Sandbach, with the referee declaring 'last play'. Unfortunately Sandbach could not hold out, and Macclesfield levelled, to end the game with what was another fair result.
