Sandbach 20 - Liverpool Collegiate 35

Sun 15 February 2004

Following the success of the Sweet Chariot Tour at which Sandbach U8s provided an excellent demonstration of tag rugby, normal service resumed with a match against Liverpool Collegiate.

It was great to see three new players Connor Burgess, Jonathan Eagle and Daniel Powell all participating fully in the game.

Under 8’s: Max Bonar-Law, Connor Burgess, Jonathan Eagle, Fred Green, Jake Harrison, Chris Jackson, Joseph Jackson, Kieran Leese, Matthew Mangan, Daniel Powell, Charlie Rogerson, Joe Stock, Thomas Stakes and Alastair Thompson.

Match 1: Sandbach 20 Liverpool Collegiate 35

Sandbach tries scored by: Chris Jackson, Fred Green, Kieran Leese 2

The first match saw Sandbach attack from the kick off, catching Liverpool cold. Some good running angles and support play from George Hubbard and Jake Harrison allowed gaps to be exploited for early tries. However, Liverpool came back strongly to lead three tries to two at half time. Two early tries in the second half from Kieran Leese put the pressure back on Liverpool. However, four quick tries from a strong running Liverpool team brought them back into the game. Unfortunately, despite throwing everything at it, Sandbach could not reply with tries of their own.

Match 2: Sandbach 30 Liverpool Collegiate 35

Sandbach tries scored by: Alistair Thompson, Thomas Stakes 3, Joseph Jackson 2.

This second game proved to be a very close encounter, which could have gone either way. Sandbach gained the upper hand early, with some great support play from Charlie Rogerson and Connor Burgess. As in match 1, Liverpool once again proved a strong and resilient outfit coming from behind to level the score at half time.

With the sun on their back, Sandbach scored early in the second half to give Thomas Stakes his hat trick. With the scores level and going into extra time, Sandbach could not get the final winning try. With time running out, Liverpool scored following a quick break down the blind side.
