Stockport 7 - Sandbach 26

Sun 14 December 2008

This week we travelled to Stockport and played our part in a strange, sometimes bizarre, game which possibly added to the excitement of the large bank of spectators. We lost a player to injury close to the end of the first half which necessitated a change of pitch. Very pleased to inform all that despite requiring hospital treatment our player has no long term damage and will be playing again soon. This delayed the start of the second half and so quite a few of the players and spectators from the other game watched ours when theirs had finished.
Stockport took full advantage of the slope in the first half and scored an early try, taking a 7 point lead. Sandbach responded well and soon took control of the game. Stockport made good use of the possession granted them by the ''laws of the game'' and defended well when they didn't have the ball in hand. Sandbach managed to play some scintillating rugby on the few occasions they were allowed to run with the ball. Unfortunately, both sets of players became increasingly frustrated with the sound of the whistle which resulted in the inevitable massed brawl (more of a 'mosh pit' than a boxing ring) at which point the referree declared an end to the game.
The players were deprived of 5 minutes of rugby in the first half and 6 minutes in the second half and Sandbach played up the slope in both halves......bizarre!
Full credit to both teams who tried their best to play a good standard of rugby under very trying circumstances. Stockport were fine hosts and we scored 26 points to achieve a 4 tries to 1 victory. Players and spectators enjoyed themselves and so all was well in the end.
