Leigh 3 25 - Sandbach 13

Sat 11 October 2008

This week’s movie premiere is brought to you buy Sandbach 2nd XV in association with Leigh 3rd with a Guess Star of the referee!!

The Sandbach boys were in fine spirit after the last few weeks of rugby even with a team that resembled the Chester Zoo lion enclosures clawing post ‘Scratch’. There were a number of key players missing because of injury in the first team and Meat Loaf this time unable to say ‘he won’t do that’ was moved up to the 1st XV for the injured Mark ‘sparrow’ Bird who had damaged his hand whilst in a ancient migration ritual that involved induction to his flock. A call up for Rud Omono who was the pick of the centres last week also left the 2nd team short.

This meant that versatile back row Lee Pickles moved into the centre with Tim Jones and Matt Stanway at 10 with Ali B away. This left room for Nammi last years colts prop and local cricket legend who wants to be named nameless for security reasons were on the wing. This was an exciting back line with good hands and try scoring ability in the centres but with Pickles proving himself to be the only one who could fit into the 10 jersey but not wearing it due to superstition had to relinquish the 12 to Stanway because he couldn’t fit in the 10 (fatty).

Anyhow back to the game, Pickles was on kicking duty today after Stanways poor performance last Saturday and he kicked off the game with a perly dazzler but the forwards were unable to take advantage and but we did manage to get the ball back for some enterprising play which lead to a early lead of 3 – 0 from a EXTREAMLY difficult penalty given for offside.

This however seemed to rally the leigh team into some kind of reaction as they went down to Sandbach’s half and gained there first but in no way last penalty. The kicker didn’t manage to convert the penalty but did manage for the second attempt a couple of minutes later for the first of his many kicks.

The first half to this action adventure lead to Stanway intercepting a pass and before the referee could blow his whistle offloaded to Pickles Who used his exceptional pace to breeze past the full back and cruise in for his second try in two games. He also added the extras 10-3.

The half ended with more pen’s from their kicker and the half ended 10-9.

This is where the Cameo role for the ref ended and he arranged with his agent to take to lead role. The soon changed from a mistake ridden action adventure to a horror for the Sandbach lads. Whilst children and potential referees were asked to leave the area, due to the match having a rating of 18. There was nothing that the referee could do about a drop goal from Tim Jones.

This was when the horror kicked in when infraction were being called from the referee that just seemed to have no meaning. When steve got a yellow card for ‘rucking’. The Sandbach teams heads went and the penalties kept being kicked and with one try being scored from a 25-13 win the kicker did well to carry on slotting all the penalties that were in front of the posts.

However this does not detracted from the poor performance from a very young team. Good performances from the colts players and from neil day kept the team a float.

But this is a game that most players are happy to blame on the ref!!!
