Altrincham Kersal 2 46 - Sandbach 5

Sat 14 March 2009

Sandbach travelled to Altrincham Kersal who benefitted from Sandbach‘s victory over Blackburn the week before. This fixture was always going to test Sandbach as the performance against Blackburn left many question marks over the team’s potential. Unfortunately Sandbach were unable to step up to the mark highlighting the difference in class between the 2 squads.

My Spanish teacher once said organisation is the key to success, so forgetting the kit and turning up at A.K. with 16 men is never going to put you in good stead. Injuries in the first 30 mins to Jarman, Loaf and Day left the team who were already lacking in depth, vulnerable.

The first half saw Sandbach play against the elements, with early breaks from Bill and Graham seeing the away side believing they good cause another upset. However, AK slowly and surely got a grip of the game and bossed the play, putting Sandbach under immense pressure. Only good organisation and hard hitting prevented AK crossing the line. AK always looked the stronger and hungrier and benefited from the weakened Sandbach side crossing the line on 2 occasions in the first half.

Half time left Sandbach trailing 12-0, but felt that with the elements in the second half and with the fight and the spirit shown in the 1st they may be able to claw themselves back into the game as they were by no means defeated.

That was until the start of the second half.

With AK making 3 “useful” substitutions at the break Sandbach were unable to cope with the extra speed and direct running.

A poor second half performance from Sandbach saw AK run in numerous tries. Sandbach lacked the fight and determination seen in the first half and un-characteristically collapsed as the 2nd half progressed. There were spells where Sandbach showed what they can produce with good running from pemb, keith, pipey and healey. A consolation score and debut try for healey gave the visitors something to go home with but in all it was a bad day at the office.

Overall a disappointing day out from start to finish, a good performance at AK would see the 2’s establish themselves in a competitive league. For Sandbach to progress they need to be winning games against AK, Blackburn, VOL on a consistent basis. Hats off to AK a very strong team, squad and setup with good technical coaches and a winning mentality. Something the Sandbach squad should learn from.

All injured parties...a speedy recovery please!
