Sandbach 9 - Broughton Park 2 39

Sat 17 January 2009

A mouthwatering fixture against high flying Broughton Park. Sandbach had to up their game against a team who had only lost once in the league this season.

The game started brightly as Sandbach applied some pressure on the opposition defence to set up a penalty for Matt Stanway, this chance was taken and the game looked like it was going to be a close encounter.

This only seemed to wake up the opposition as they came straight back and some good handling and poor defending allowed their winger to score.

Sandbach were competing well with the ball and Ray Jones made a break through the opposition back line to link up with brother Tim, however the defence got back to save a near try.

Matt Stanway kept is in the game by adding two further penalties. However it was without the ball where Sandbach didn't fair quite so well as tackling was virtually non existant and some quick recycling and strong runners allowed Broughton Park further tries before half time to open up a 17-9 lead.

Sandbach came out the second half looking to make up for earlier mistakes, however missed tackles (again) seemed to let us down and Broughton Park managed to score 4 unanswered second half tries to open up the winning margin.

We did manage some good play near the end with backs and forwards linking up to make inroads into the opposition defence, the defence stayed firm and Broughton took the 4 points back up to Manchester with them.

A dissapointing performance from the 2's, as basic errors let us down. All credit to Broughton Park who's pacey young side were more than a match for us on this occasion.

Pembo battled hard at number 8 and made good yards with ball in hand, Tom Stubbs was tenacious in his tackling and the Jones brothers worked hard in the Centres.

Lets get back to winning ways in the battle of the Pembertons at Whitchurch next week.

Pens: Stanway x 3

Sandbach were:

Mike Betley, Neil Dey (Steve Hassall), Dan Peake, George Elphick, Dan Faulkner, Colin Wyatt, Tom Stubbs, John Pemberton, Nick Oakes (Dan Butler), Matt Stanway, Pete Wardlaw, Ray Jones, Tim Jones, Mike Huss, Will Rees
