Manchester 21 - Sandbach 7

Sun 4 February 2007

Many thanks to Manchester for giving us a game this weekend as Bowdon informed us that they couldn't raise a team midweek, and thanks to John for arranging it.
Played on a pitch which resembled the Somme and Blackpool as there wasn't a blade of grass on it and a few bags of sand, we started the game with 12 players, one arriving late (lie in for Anthony!) and by the end of the game the team was down to 10 through injury.
The first half belonged to Sandbach with the best rugby being played all season. Something clicked in everyone with passing going along the lines, not commiting numbers into rucks and mauls, and not being intiminated by some of their larger players. Scoring first through a Danny Owen try which was converted by Robert Coggon we then just sat back a little bit which allowed Manchester in at the end of the half for a converted try.
The second half started off much the same for Sandbach as the first with some nice skills being shown and flowing play. Injuries started to take their toll, swapping people and positions around to recover from knocks and then as the pitch was getting heavier and players were getting tired Manchester sneaked a couple of converted tries at the death, one from a dubious knock on from our defensive kick out, which the ref said at the end that from his position it looked ok. No problem with the ref this week who controlled the game well and let it flow by playing some good advantages for both teams.
Enough energy was summoned up at the end by Robert, Danny, Joe, Jake and Anthony to demolish the sausages and chips provided afterwards.
Well played to the whole team for a really good performance.
