Wirral 17 - Sandbach 21

Sun 11 March 2007

Twelve players turned out on what was a great day to play rugby, no rain and a nice green lush surface to play on. This would suit our style of play which is why after ten minutes of the first half was found ourselves 10-0 down to two unconverted tries. We then got into it and some good play saw us awarded a penalty within sight of the Wirral try line. Passing quickly out to the wing saw our winger no.1 the loosehead prop Joe Stock flying over the line, keeping his feet in play this week for the first score. Thomas Stakes took over conversion responsibility this week and calmly slotted over the 2 extra points. The rest of the half was played out in the middle of the pitch and ended 10-7.
Well the second started with Sandbach like a team possessed coming out of the starting blocks flying. Whatever was said at half time had the desired effect as we started to camp out in the Wirral half. It wasn’t long before the ball was won, Joe Jackson went sprinting out to the wing, good pass out to Ross Burkinshaw who dived into the corner to score. Once again Thomas Stakes kicked over the bar for those 2 valuable extra points. It seemed as though we were winning most of the lineouts and scrums, good stealing against the head, and the rucking today was class. It wasn’t long before a ruck developed about three yards out from the Wirral line. Thomas Stakes picked up and with Jake Harrison adding the momentum powered over the line for try number three. Thomas then decided to give everyone a scare by aiming for the angle of the bar and upright, slotting over with a layer of paintwork to spare. To be fair to Wirral they never let their heads go down once and came back and scored a converted try. Danny Owen then produced a tackle of try saving proportions, think Josh Lewsey in the Autumn internationals and you won’t be far wrong, and the whole team contributed to keeping Wirral at bay. No further scores were added and when the referee (who had another good game this week) blew for full time we had made it three wins on the bounce.
Thanks once again to the travelling army of mums and dads, etc, the team really value your support and encouragement.
Team:- Forwards: Joe Stock, Adam Lockett, Ashleigh Walton, Cameron Rae, Jake Harrison; Backs: Thomas “O’Gara” Stakes, Joe Jackson, Chris Jackson, Danny Owen, Megan Standring, Tom Cree, Ross Burkinshaw, well done to all.
