Cheshire Cup 1 - Sandbach 0

Sun 22 April 2007

We did have a good day, irrespective of the games won and lost. We got through to the Plate final, played six games, lost four, but what we did was to come away in the knowledge that as a team we played to our best, gave 100% commitment and the Club can be justly proud of this.
First half of the day was the league element for the Cup. In a strong group with Altrincham Kersal, Macclesfield and Stockport, qualifying would be tough but with our capabilities we could do it. The record will show played 3 lost 3 with no points scored. But we look under these figures. Stockport only beat us with their only foray into our half with the speed of their player being the only difference. Some bizarre refereeing decisions in the other games conspired to give the opposition points but not us. Lady luck had certainly deserted us.
This meant that because of the team entries we had to play a preliminary Plate round to reach a semi final.
Northwich were our opponents and by the end of the first half we were trailing 0-7. Other teams would have folded but belief set in, the game was taken by the scruff of the neck with first Robert going over and then Danny adding a second. Robert being Mr. Dependable in front of the posts converted both. Elation and relief. As coaches, parents, etc we knew the team had it in them and now they proved it 14-7, semi final against Winnington Park was next.
From the first kick of the semi final Joe Jackson led the squad in like Attila and his Huns. There was really only one team in it. Winnington Park did put up some resistance and although this certainly wasn’t a one sided affair we certainly dominated for long periods of the game (that’s if you can when playing 7 minutes each way). George started the scoring off with a well deserved try and Danny then got a brace (that’s as in 2 and not as in dental work) with Robert once again showing just how easy it is to keep putting that ball over that bar for the extra 6 points. Won 21-0, the final beckoned.
We just had enough time to have our photograph taken by a professional photographer (fussy, can’t kneel, squat down, short ones at the back, smile, only one ball, gum shields out, head guards off, etc – AAAGGGGHHHH just take the picture!! Not the best preparation), our own resident snapper Richard Beal did the same operation but a lot quicker with a great result (reproduced on the website).
So to the final in what was fast becoming a deserted ground. Opponents were Old Anselmians. We gave a good account of ourselves although we lost 28-0 (I think this is right I lost count). It will be remembered though for the fact that Robert got taken off to hospital, precautionary, with a suspected fractured arm. Thankfully it was just bruised.
So the day ended with a tired squad, tired spectators, no Cup, Plate, losing medals, just certificates.
Positives for the day? There were a lot. But three stand out. James Barry turning up to support the team, Phil Harrison for nearly losing his voice in vocal support and for volunteering to take Robert to hospital and thus missing Jake playing in the final, and Thomas Cree for three quite breathtaking defensive tackles.
To all the squad, well done, well played, you were a credit to the Club and crest on your shirts!

Squad: Jake Harrison; Danny Owen; Alastair Thompson; Thomas Stakes; Adam Lockett; Nathan Norwood; Ashleigh Walton; Chris Jackson; George Beal; Joe Jackson; Anthony Dowell; Robert Coggon; Megan Standring; Joe Stock; Cameron Rae; Thomas Cree.

Did anyone recognise the ground on the back of the programme?
