Sandbach 60 - Congleton 10

Sun 22 October 2006

Try scorers: Joe Jackson (2), Ryan Stoneley, Danny Owen (2), Thomas Stakes (2), George Beal (4), James Barry
From start to finish we dominated the four games and it is credit to Congleton that they kept playing right up to the end. Admittedly they had a small squad with only two replacements but they also had a strong determination. The Sandbach handling was good from the start as was our driving forward. For the first two games our downfall was the scrum and lineout of which we lost the majority but we more than made up with our defensive line with everyone helping out. With shades of those well known rugby clubs, Chelsea and Arsenal, we rotated the team around moving some players into unfamiliar positions which will give us options for later games and later in the season. Some changes will work, some won’t, but hopefully everyone will understand that what suits a player now might not be the best position in the future. Giving exposure to a number of positions not only helps in a better understanding of the game but allows us as coaches to have more options open to us to pick teams and offer replacements. Credit to the players for, with the exception of the odd small moan, they got on with the job in hand. When I played at their age I was a hooker, then played prop, second row and ending at 16 as No.8, even having half a game on the wing, having to catch a train to keep up with the centres! We had some good flowing moves, started to win a lot more of the breakdown balls, and then started to win scrums and lineouts. A player from the Congleton side then got injured, a broken nose, and they had at that time no replacement. Well done to all the team for clapping him off and a big hand to Ben who volunteered to come off to make it even numbers.
Once again we were blessed with good weather and a good pitch to play on and showed that we have the ability to play good flowing rugby. We enjoyed ourselves as well and had fun. The support from the sidelines was the thirteenth player for us, many thanks.
