Sandbach 27 - Chester 17

Sun 27 April 2003

After a very long wait Sandbach eventually recorded their first ever win
over Chester thro' this age group.
Chester were missing a couple of players including their England second row,
however Sandbach were also short of 2 back row players and winger Liam
Clarke.
We did however welcome back long term injury man Carl WJ at fly half.

Playing down hill against the wind Sandbach set off at a storming pace with
second row James Brough very much to the fore with some tremendous runs. It
was from such a run that we scored our first try by 'Broughie' himself
Sandbach dominated the first half with Chester only coming into the game
thro' the boot of full back Nick Butler and the constant 'sniping' of
flanker Adam Dean. (Too many times in the game he ripped the ball from our
players)
A second try was scored by Andy Pipe following good runs and support from
James Brough and Liam Hunt, but Sandbach really needed the third try to give
ourselves that extra leeway.
This came from a good blind side move with Dan Butler feeding Gareth Jarman
to make excellent ground to score in the corner
The first half saw some good Sandbach Rugby both forwards and backs but we
lacked that final support pass to really put the game out of reach, we could
have scored a 'hat full' during this period.

Sandbach 17 Chester 0

We knew the second half would be more difficult than the first, what we
didn't expect was that we would make it far more difficult for ourselves
than it needed to be.

From some good early pressure Sandbach were awarded a penalty which they
rightly decided to kick to give a 20-0 score line to make life that little
bit more difficult for Chester.
Sandbach were then put under some pressure by the visitors resulting in a
22m drop out. This was taken quickly by Sandbach only resulting in giving
the Chester wing a free run in from 20m which was duly converted.
This set to wake us up a little and start using the forwards to greater
effect to gain ground.
From a 5m scrum we 'messed up' to give Chester the ball. From this scrum
great pressure from Mark Bird , 'The Beast', and Dan Butler forced Chester
to put down behind their line.
From this 5m scrum we got the ball to Rick Jones who powered over to score
near the posts.
Rick was forced to leave the pitch, and the team was changed slightly to
accommodate this.
Not one of my best moves changing Donal from full back, as from the kick off
Chester gained possession and 2 missed tackles later had scored.
Straight from the kick off good Sandbach pressure drove Chester all the way
back under their own posts, but to their credit they managed to get the ball
away and broke from their own line to score despite the best efforts of
Donal.
This came a little too late for Chester as the whistle went after the failed
conversion.

Not such a good second half performance but an excellent win.

The players to stand out today were:
Bernie 'The Beast' for his all round performance.
Dan Butler & Rick Jones for their excellent midfield work.
James Brough for his first half drives (a little less 'ale' next season is
required)
Some excellent tackles by Donal
A welcome return by Carl.

This ended the best ever season for this team, only losing 5 times, twice to
the current County Champions Altrincham, once each to Chester, Mold and
Northwich.

Good luck to everyone during the close season in their examinations and the
Club hopes to see you all back in September if not before, for pre-season
training!!

Chris Butler
