Sandbach 14 - Wilmslow 7

Sun 24 November 2002

This was certainly not a game for the 'purist', however it was our first win over Wilmslow in all the games that we have played against them through the years and to do so in the Cheshire Cup was even better.

With this seasons captain James Brough 'under the weather' Dan Butler captained the side with Stew Pickles leading the pack.

Sandbach decided to use the slope in the first half and for most of the 30 min half they were camped in the Wilmslow 22. For long periods of time the Wilmslow defence held firm through a combination of good tackling and poor finishing from the home side. Eventually from a wayward kick out of defence James Brough caught the ball cleanly and ran in from 40 yds via an excellent hand off and some 'hard' running. The try was converted by Carl WJ to give the home side a deserved lead.

Further pressure gave Andy Pipe a chance to 'dance' in from about 10m to score near the posts with Carl again converting. Sandbach should then have extended their lead on a number of occasions only to fail with the last pass or the reluctance of the ball carrier to release a colleague in a better position. This could have cost us dear later on. Our first half dominance was shown by the number of Wilmslow scrums and lineouts we took from them.

Half Time: Sandbach 14 - Wilmslow 0

The second half was a complete reversal of the first. Wilmslow had the slope in their favour and had long periods of pressure in the home side 22. For most of it sandbach were able to withstand but we finally broke to allow Wilmslow to score a well worked break leaving us 1 on 1 at the back with Ally Mc not quite able to prevent the score. The try was converted.

The game was played at a 'high level' of intensity and tempers were lost on a number of occasions, by both sides. During one incident a Sandbach player was adjudged to have kicked a Wilmslow player and was sent from the pitch.

This put extra pressure on the home side who were protecting a one try & conversion lead.

The 14 man Sandbach side defended well and when Ally Mc was faced with another 1 on 1 we feared the worst. Ally then produced a wonderful try saving tackle with both Man and Ball being hauled to the ground. The home side held out some extensive periods of pressure with the whole back line putting in top-notch tackles along the way.

Whilst this is a W in the result column it certainly wasn't one of our most memorable performances and we will have to improve considerably if we are to go further in this years Cheshire Cup.

Man of The Match today was Stew Pickles
