Manchester 30 - Sandbach 5

Sun 23 March 2003

Ouch. Manchester played very well and were hungrier for the ball, we tackled and tackled and tackled but eventually their ball retention was too good and produced space. Time and again we took what little ball we could get into contact and left it there for Manchester to come round and pick up. We were 20 points to nil down at half time and a big hill to climb. Some positional changes at the break saw us compete better at the breakdown, we were beginning to work them out. Credit to the team, they kept trying to the end and were rewarded by a try. For the first time this season we didn?t win a scrum all game. We lost the second half by 2 tries to one, so things must have improved.

Team: James Stops, Joe Barton, Chris Burrows, Connor Benson, Nick Rogers, Luke Gross, Elliot Moore, Will Jepson, Kurt Hurlstone-Johnson.

Manchester B 5 Sandbach B 30
Only 8 players aside, so we opted for uncontested scrums and Manchester were keen to agree. What can one say? Joseph Cooper, relishing a run out in the backs and sporting a new hairstyle to commemorate the occasion was into everything, tackling, turning ball over, great driving runs and some passing, oh yes and the small matter of 4 tries. Katie McEvoy was a thorough nuisance again, locking up the ball well on their take into the maul and was driven over for a try. Nick Muldoon at Scrum Half was in support and got the ball away well. Alistair Allen scored the other try. A good team performance with some good tackling on display.

Player of the match went to Nick Muldoon for his best performance of the season.

Team: Ben Dutton, Alex Clutterbuck, Ben Sharpe, Nick Muldoon, Thomas Jackson, Joseph Cooper, Alistair Allen, Katie McEvoy.
