Sandbach 0 - Mold 15

Sun 23 February 2003

Mold visited us on Sunday and inflicted only our second defeat of the season by 15 points to nil. Again we wondered what is missing from the Sandbach team?s diet, although many times this season we have beaten bigger teams, this lot were not only bigger, they were better. From the start it was clear that Mold would rumble the ball up the middle with a very powerful mauling style, they committed all but 2 of their players to the maul time and time again but controlled the ball well for two tries in the first half. The second half saw Sandbach move up a gear and they countered Mold well. Unfortunately the selection of tactics on the field was as predictable as it was ineffective, our forwards to the ball in at pace, got tackled, went to ground, lost the ruck then had to defend. Surely this was a day for passing along the line but even the backs just ran straight, the poor old wingers tackled well but rarely saw the ball. The good thing about this defeat was that the team?s heads never went down, they kept trying to the end. In the end we were beaten by a bigger and better team who were very well drilled. Just what the doctor ordered before the Cheshire Cup, thank goodness for Mold being in Wales. Player of the match went to Joe Barton for getting to the breakdown fast and supporting well.

Team: James Stops, Joseph Cooper (Chris Burrows), Joe Barton, William Jepson, Nick Rogers, Luke Gross, Jack Robinson, William Bordill, Kurt Hurlstone-Johnson

Sandbach Scorpions B 0 Mold 45

For the second game Mold fielded essentially the same team, this would be a massive test of the resolve of the Sandbach team who turned in what was probably their best performance of the season. Sandbach never gave up and made Mold work for their tries. There was some excellent tackling and tenacious play, Katie McEvoy again making a thorough nuisance of herself, well done Katie. Player of the match went to Tom Wardle for some cracking tackling and getting involved wherever needed.

Team: Benjamin Dutton, Tom Johnson, Tom Wardle, Connor Benson, Oliver Ridley, Thomas Jackson, Alistair Allen, Katie McEvoy, Nick Muldoon (Ben Sharpe)
