Sandbach 7 - Chester 24

Sun 19 January 2003

A very disappointing result after such a good run of recent wins. The better side won on the day, and throughout the game the visitors played with greater 'will to win' and basically out fought and thought the home side.

In the first half Chester played up the slope with the wind in their advantage and used it well. They had much the better of the territory throughout a hard fought first half. There wasn't a great deal of running rugby but what there was it tended to
be Chester who had the greater time on the ball. During this period Chester did go over the try line but the referee adjudged
that the ball was held up and so didn't award the try. A few minutes later Chester got their reward when Sandbach didn't clear their lines and whilst the Sandbach forwards stood watching Chester picked the ball up and went over from close range.

Half Time
Sandbach 0 Chester 5

With the elements in their favour you would have thought that we would have used the wind to drive us into the corner and keep pressure on the Chester defence. But no! In the first 15 min of the second half Sandbach had their best spell and
came close to scoring a couple of times. We did manage to 'foul up' a 3 on 2 with some awful back play. When we did win some good scrum ball the backs set up Rick Jones to power his way under the posts. Ally Mc converted to put Sandbach in front.

From there on in Chester dominated the game and Sandbach seemed to have the knack of putting themselves under pressure for no reason. A poor kick to the wrong side of the field from a defensive penalty put us straight back under pressure and from there we managed to give away a stupid penalty try. Heads then went down as did our performance as Sandbach allowed two further trys to be run in during the last 5 mins.

For three quarters of this game the result could have gone either way, but Chester greater will to win saw them through in the end.

Chris Butler.
