Cheshire Cup - Under 12's make Final |
On Sunday 22nd April Sandbach Under 12's participated in the annual Cheshire Cup tournament at Caldy RUFC.
The final training session was held on Saturday morning in warm, sunny conditions. Unfortunately Sunday dawned wet, miserable and cold.
In the group stages Sandbach were drawn with Lymm, Wirral and Congleton. Our first game was against Lymm, who were much improved from when we played them earlier in the season. In a hard fought encounter, the only try of the game was scored by Ben Phillips, early in the second half. Will Cargill converted and we held on to win our first game.
The second game was another close game, against Congleton. Again, we won with a single try from Eddie Taylor, which was then converted by Will Cargill.
The third, and final group game, was against Wirral, who had also won both their group games scoring more tries than what Sandbach had. Sandbach had to win to come top of the group. In a tough game Sandbach were always on top with our defence well organised. From a well worked penalty move Ryan Connelly made space for Sam Sherratt to score in the corner. Again Will Cargill converted.
We were now through to the quarter finals and improving with every game.
The front row of Ryan Connelly, Ben Phillips and Andrew Nash, were now dominating in the scrum and the second row of Jack Seddon and Matt Jackson were outstanding in the loose and supporting play.
In the quarter finals we were drawn against Winnington Park and in this game we put together the complete package, dominating from start to finish winning 4 converted tries to nil. Winnington Park were not even able to get in our half, tries were scored by Liam Stent, Richard Murray, Jack Seddon and Sam Sherratt. The half back combination of Liam Stent and Ally Burton were now starting to run the show and we looked forward to a semi-final against Chester.
Chester are a side we have never beaten and they have beaten us twice in previous semi-finals but today was our day, the forwards dominated from the word go with Ben Middleton outstanding, the centre partnership of Will Cliffe and Richard Murray created space for Eddie Taylor to score in the corner which Will Cargill again converted, just to the game of Ben Middleton proved unstoppable from 5 yards to score the second try which Will Cargill again converted. We were through to the final to face Altrincham Kersal.
The final was a very close fought affair with both sides trying to play decent rugby in appalling weather conditions, unfortunately Altrincham Kersal's bigger forwards were starting to make inroads into the Sandbach defence and finally we conceded our first try in the tournament. In the second half Sandbach tried to break through the Altrincham side but in the last minute we conceded another try to lose the final two tries to nil.
Although falling at the final hurdle Sandbach under 12's gave everything on the day and can proudly hold their heads up high.
Special thanks to Ben Culloty and Edward Russell who were important members of the squad who didn't get a great deal of playing time, also many thanks to the mum's and dad's who turned up to watch the tournament in appalling weather conditions.
