Stoke Festival - Caldy 5 - Sandbach 10

Sun 27 April 2003

Stoke Festival

Firstly, our thanks to Stoke for organising a highly enjoyable day for all the players, families and coaches. The Sandbach Scorpions carried off the trophy with a perfect end to the season, played 3, won 3.

Our first opponents were Caldy, the team that knocked us out of the Cheshire Cup. Caldy had arrived late and had little time to prepare. Based on our knowledge of them from the Cheshire Cup we decided to play 4 forwards with our left winger acting as the fourth. We started well with good tackling and clearing out of the bigger Caldy forwards, they were going backwards when suddenly they broke down our left wing and ran three quarters of the length of the pitch to score. 5 points down, how would we respond? The team kept its shape and were moving the ball about well and pressurising Caldy in defence, we then put them under concerted pressure and Nick Rogers went over to equalise juts before half time.
The second Half saw us dominate the game and compete far better for the loose ball, we held our own in the scrum and even disrupted their put in n occasion. On a very narrow pitch it was a surprise to get few line outs, however we were sharper at these as well. Mid way through the half Rogers went over for his and the team?s second try. The defence then tightened again and on the final whistle we had reversed the Cheshire cup score to leave Caldy ruing their late arrival, perhaps the coach with wheels is as important as the ones on the training ground?

Team: James Stops, Joseph Cooper, Joe Barton, Elliot Moore, Jack Robinson, Will Bordill, William Jepson, Nick Rogers, Kurt Hurlestone-Johnson.
