Northwich (Cheshire Plate Final) 7 - Sandbach 10

Mon 5 May 2008

Gritty Sandbach dug deep to lift the Cheshire Vase for the first time in 23 years.

Aiming to complete a hat-trick of wins over their fierce local rivals Northwich, the BradwallRoad outfit were nowhere near their best at Winnington park.

But with sheer determination and drive - and with the support of hundreds of fans - they held off severe second half pressure to allow skipper Tim Oakes to hold aloft the trophy.

Player-coach Will Stockdale said: "I'm very proud of the boys. We didn't play particularly well and if I'm honest, they were all over us in the second half.

"We defended gallantly. Ferocious tackles were going in and we showed real grit and resilience to hold them off. It was a dogged performance, but sometimes, that is necessary.

"Northwich were fired up to avoid loasing to us for a third time this season and they played well. But any side that can win a match despite playing below their best is on the right track.

"It is great for the Club. We've only ever won the Vase once before, in 1985, so it is a great achievement. The lads have worked very hard for it and they deserve all the credit they get.

"Finishing fifth in the league and winning the vase has raised the bar again. I am already talking to a couple of potential new signings as we aim to push higher up the league next season."

In front of a packed crowd at Winnington, sandbach edged ahead midway through bthe first half with an Alex Reay try which was converted by Will Cargill.

Around 10 minutes later, Northwich levelled with a converted try of their own, but Cargill's penalty gave Sandbach the advantage going into the break.

The second half was one-way traffic as Northwich surged forwards in desparate waves of pressure. Sandbach bodies were put on the line as they scrapped, fought and battled for every ball. They had some good fortune as Northwich missed a couple of penalty kicks at goal and they managed to hold on until the final whistle to the cheers of relief from the travelling fans.
