For our final game of the season we travelled in style to Glossop (well on a coach). A few weeks ago we conceded over 50 points to them, but this time with a game plan in place and some key players back we knew we could give them a more competitive game.
The early stages of the game were played in the Glossop 22 with the Sandbach players putting pressure on the Glossop backs and not allowing them to clear their lines. A couple of clearing kicks were charged down a number of times but the Beest and G Owen were penalised for been off side by the referee (eagle eyed Murray). For all the dominance of territory we had the well organised Glossop defence held firm. With half time approaching Glossop did manage to break out of defence and won a penalty just inside our 22 which they elected to kick and scored from. They then extended their lead by scoring an excellent well worked try which was not converted. Half time 8-0.
The second half was always going to be difficult with the strong wind in our faces, it was even more important we stopped the Glossop backs kicking for position. We did conceded a further 20 points from some excellent rehearsed backs moves, with the number 10 and 12 combining very well.
The Sandbach lads never gave up, with Pembo leading the charge and scoring 2 converted tries one been the last play of the game and season.
Full credit to every player who wore the Green shirt with pride and passion in the game, some of the tackling was just outstanding, with Lou Burgess putting his body on the line and nailing anything that was in blue, don’t think he missed a tackle in the whole game. Every player gave 100% and more. The best complement was made by the Glossop coach who wants us to play them twice again next season, we are one of the best teams they have played.
Thanks to all those parents who managed to come along and support the lads, big thank you also to those injured players who came along and who all wished they could have played in the game, (next time James Tse you will play against them).
