Sandbach rounded off their season by hosting Scottish club, Panmure RFC under 14’s. The Panmure party made the long journey from East Dundee for a weekend tour of Cheshire. As close season work on the club pitches had begun, we were grateful to Sandbach School for allowing us to play the game there.
Unfortunately not knowing the strength of Cheshire rugby at this age group the Panmure boys had the day before, faced the recently crowned County Champions at Caldy before taking on Sandbach in their Sunday game. The Panmure squad was made up of a mixture of Under 13’s and 14’s and despite several Sandbach absences, once the game started it quickly became clear that Sandbach were far too strong for their visitors. Tries were run in at regular intervals but to their great credit the Panmure boys never let their heads go down and continued to show determined defence that made Sandbach work for their scores.
At half time, the coaches agreed that some players should swap sides resulting in a more evenly contested second half. After the match the players, coaches and parents returned to the Sandbach club for a BBQ (many thanks to chefs and helpers – especially Dave and Eileen) and we were entertained by one of the younger members of the Panmure party who was a skilled piper.
It was a good way to end another successful season for Sandbach. I hope that despite a couple of days of tough rugby our visitors from Panmure enjoyed the day as much as the Sandbach contingent did.
Finally I would like to add my thanks to the coaches and parents for all their support and dedication and to all the players for their efforts during the season – at your best you play some of the finest rugby at this age group in the country – let’s keep it up and here’s to next season!
