Stoke Festival - Stoke 5 - Sandbach 10

Sun 27 April 2003

Stoke Festival

Due to bad weather, we hadn?t played Stoke this season. From the previous season we thought they might play a tight forward dominated style, we were wrong, Stoke were missing some of their better forwards. Due to a couple of clubs letting themselves and us all down by not turning up on the day, we had to play this game straight after our previous match. The game opened with Sandbach dominating the loose and tight forward play the Sandbach defence was all enveloping and although Stoke kept the ball alive well, they rarely made much ground with it. From one such piece of pressure near the Stoke line, they tried to pass left to get out of trouble, the defence was again up fast and forced a loose pass, William Jepson showed great awareness to dive on the ball in the in goal to score. Stoke came back at us and strung together an excellent series of phases which made ground up the field and stretched the Sandbach defence on way and then the other to eventually force a breach through which they scored a great try. 5 points apiece at half time. More of the same from Sandbach who looked to be improving as a team with every minute on the pitch. A Chris Burrows drive from the kick off saw us get close to the line, we stayed there for a while and then Elliot Moore broke through and drove over to score the winning try. 10 points to 5, counting is always a good thing as early in the second half we realised that we had an extra player on the pitch, credit to Stoke who noted the problem but made nothing of it.

Team: James Stops, , Joe Barton, Chris Burrows (Joseph Cooper), Elliot Moore, Jack Robinson, Will Bordill (Katy McEvoy), William Jepson, Nick Rogers, Kurt Hurlestone-Johnson.
