Wilmslow 12 - Sandbach 39
Sat 11 September 2004
Yet again Sandbach's fourth team players had to step up to fill in the gaps
left in the third team, for the short journey to Wilmslow for the first
league match of the season.
Within 20 seconds Sandbach were in the lead as from the kick off Wilmslow
committed a schoolboy error. Fly half Martin Beecher hoisted the ball into
the centre of the Wilmslow pack. No one called or even moved towards the
ball. The ball bounced, was caught by flanker Ian Plant, who went over to
score Sandbach's first points.
From the kick off Sandbach were back in Wilmslow's half and came away
another try as the forwards drove the ball over the line.
After 20 minutes David Pipe had to be replaced by Joe Patinson (better give
up the fags Dave!). Sandbach's backs looked well with the ball and Steve
Smith had a stormer of a game, and deserved to score more points.
At half time Wilmslow came back with a vengeance and scored two quick tries,
moving them to with in a try of Sandbach (20 -12) another try could have
swung the game. Captain Steve Jones then made several changes swapping Bill
Poole for Ian Plant and Gavin Smith for Andy Maddock. It was ten minutes
before anyone realised that this was a bad move and for safety Andy Maddock
was brought back into the front row. During this time Wilmslow were unlucky
not to score as their forwards were camped on Sandbach's line.
As Wilmslow’s fresh legs started to fail Sandbach began to get back on top, getting the ball out to the backs, and with the forwards in support, Sandbach’s second row Steve Marchant broke through to score under the posts, Martin Beecher Converted with ease, quiff still in tact.
