Sun 21 November 2004
Cheshire Cup 1st round
Sandbach U14s 17 Crewe & Nantwich U14s 5
Sandbach are through to the next round of the Cheshire Cup but not without putting there coaches through a nail biting 50 minutes.
With Tom Stubbs back as captain after a ten week absence due to a broken foot the game started well with ever present Lee Imiolek securing ball from the KO and driving the ball well in to C & N half, with great support play from the Sandbach forwards scrum half Connor Mcevoy was able to feed fly half George Oakey with a perfect pass which gave him that extra second to make a clinical break before getting the ball out to Chris Bailey on the wing who meandered his way through the Crewe back line before scoring under the post. Try converted by Ben Trump.
Not to be phased by the early score C & N came straight back at Sandbach but could not break down the strong and well organised home defence, from great turn over ball Sandbach’s rampaging forwards sped down the centre of the park showing some fantastic interlinking skills, with a two man over lap Sandbach were sure to score !! but a knock from back row Alister Wallace allowed Crewe’s winger to pick up the ball and run virtually the length of the pitch to score under the post.(Good advantage played by the ref).
From the restart Sandbach began to realise that they had got there work cut out. With continuous pressure form the Sandbach forwards C & N gave away a penalty 15 meters from there own try line, a penalty 2 move was called, not only did this outwit the C & N team but nearly took referee Rob Sparks by surprise the outcome was a score for Lee Imiolek in the corner which gave Sandbach a half time lead 12 points to 5 .
The second half got under way and with only a 7 point lead Sandbach would have to work really hard if they were to go through in to the next round of the Cup.
Straight form the KO C & N put Sandbach under a great deal of pressure that was to last for 15 minutes, with good organisation and discipline Sandbach would take everything
C & N would throw at them, it came of great relief when Man of the match Tom Chambers managed to steal the ball from Crewe’s forwards and after fighting is way through half of the C & N team before off loading the ball to Alister Wallace who was ever present in support only to be driven in to touch 10 meters from the Crewe line.
From the lineout Lee Imiolek would pinch the ball at No 2 and drive over the line for what would be the winning score in the game.
Chris Bailey, Alister Wallace, Lee Imiolek.
