Sandbach 5 - Sale Amateurs 19

Sat 6 November 2004

It was a damp, and miserable day at Bradwall Road in many aspects for Sandbach thirds. One or two changes to last weekends line up with Simon Price guesting in for a game.

Sandbach started as they meant to go on, with the forwards taking the ball on time and time again, with strong runs from Richard Pickford, Steve Jones, and Dan Stubbs. With all of the forwards in support and fly half Albert Chan, bringing the ball back inside. Put Sale under pressure. This pressure paid dividends, when scrum half Steve Sutton sniped blind and with Stuart Millward in support. Crossed the line the score an unconverted try.

The Game ebbed and flowed but Sandbach were always in the ascension, Sale tackling like demons to keep them out. The Two young props, Chris Dyer and Gareth Jervis, held their own as Sale put the Sandbach Scrum under pressure. But it was in the line out that Sandbach Excelled with Dan Stubbs taking his own and disrupting Sale’s ball.

With all of this possession Sandbach could not score, they struggled to get the ball out along the back line to pacey winger Dan Adams, and the slippery day could be blamed for the knock ons but not the passes to thin air and ankles.

Although under the cosh once the Sale backs got the ball they looked dangerous and were the next team who looked like scoreing. With a three man overlap, the ball carrier was bundled into touch by full back Steve Marchant, saving Sandbach from a certain try.

Just before half time Sale charged down a kick and won the chase to the line for their next points. Shortly afterwards Sale’s hooker left the pitch with a neck injury.

At half time with Sandbach nip and tuck they decided not to make any changes, especially as the Scrums were now uncontested. The game from then on was as the weather like a damp squib.

With so many handling errors by Sandbach sale through uncontested scrums were given possession of the ball time and time again. With this possession they proceeded to kick the high ball for their backs to run on to. On several occasions Sandbach’s back’s committed the cardinal error of letting the ball bounce. Sales’s next points came from one of these high balls which no-one called for, it bounced past both the winger and full back, for the Sale winger to run on to score.

Sale now in the lead began to exploit this dropping to a five-man line, thus giving them pace in the centres, which they used to great success. Their final points coming as again the Sandbach backs failed to secure a loose ball. Every youngster is told to dive on the ball. Sale were up quickly and the try was scored.

A very lack lustre performance by Sandbach thirds, which hopefully will not be the case when they take on Wirral 3rds at Bradwall Road next Saturday

Gareth Jervis, Andy Ennis, Chris Dyer, Dan Stubbs, Steve Jones, Simon Price, Frank Boughey, Richard Pickford (Capt.) Steve Sutton, Albert Chan, Dan Adams, Andy Green, Lee Thompson, Stuart Millward, Steve Marchant.

Replacements: Andy Maddock, Steve Roe
