Caldy Junior Festival 17 - Sandbach 47

Sun 20 March 2005

Scorpions try a taste of things to come

Sandbach Under 12s returned to Caldy for a 15 aside festival. Most of the players have been playing 15 aside at school this season but not with the club, so it was good to get a chance to try out the full size pitch and the additional three players ahead of next season. We travelled with two goals, firstly to put things right against Altrincham Kersal following the previous week’s draw in the Cheshire Cup and secondly, to try out some new combinations in the Forwards. We took a squad of 22 players and ensured everyone got a game.

Squad: Allen, Barton, Benson, Bordill, Blagbrough, Cooper, Holbrook, Holdcroft, Hurlstone-Johnson, Jackson, Jepson, Mason, Moore E., Moore R., Robinson, Sharpe, Smith, Standring, Stops, Thompson A., Thompson S., Wardle.

First up was Winnington Park we were playing with a strong wind behind us. Park kicked off and from an unpromising gather of the ball, it was passed through several pairs of hands to find space on the wing. The Backs like having space to operate in and galloped three quarters of the length of the pitch and scored with Jack Robinson adding the conversion. Sandbach soon scored again with another converted try and then let in a soft try from a 5 metre scrum where the new back row will I am sure learn their trade in the coming months. Winnington Park’s joy was short lived as Sandbach ran in another try, which was converted to give a 21 points to 5 victory.

There was no need to motivate the players for the game against Altrincham Kersal. Playing with the wind in the first half we saw some great rugby from both sides with Sandbach scoring a converted try to lead 7 points to nil at half time. In the second half the orders were to keep the ball in hand and defend well against the inevitable kicks that would come our way. Message received and understood, Altrincham rarely got into the Sandbach half and two further tries were scored, one of which was converted to end the game at 19 points to nil. A great display of thinking rugby delivered what we wanted.

For the game against Caldy we made sure everyone got a game and the Sandbach Forwards played really well as a unit against a strong Caldy side. Sandbach, playing with the wind, went over for a try to lead by 5 points at half time. After the break Caldy came back and scored under the posts from some woeful tackling. Trailing by two points we then took the ball to the other end of the field and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. Before every game the Backs had been asking whether they could take drop goals and penalties and even practised these. The Coaches were screaming themselves hoarse on the touchline for the kick to be taken, so what option did the team choose? Yes, run it, not only run it, but run it and knock on in contact. Great! The Caldy Coach allowed himself a well deserved smile and offered thanks above for this bit of fortune. Caldy then ran in a superb try to win by 12 points to 7.

All in all it was a very good day and one suspects that all three games could have been won at the expense of playing time for squad members, we hope this investment will pay dividends in the future. We achieved our goals and the Coaching team has a lot of work to do. The players have discovered the higher fitness levels needed to play on a full size pitch.

Congratulations to the squad members who turned out for Winnington Park in addition to their Sandbach duties. And finally, many thanks to Caldy for another good day out.
