Sandbach 40 - Wilmslow 20

Sun 5 December 2004

1st Quarter: Sandbach 10 - Wilmslow 10

Team: Max Bonar-Law, Jake Armitage, George Hubbard, Stephen Lynch, Harry Broady, Megan Standring, James Barry, Loucas Thomas-Garratt, George Beal, Charlie Rogerson.

A good first 10 minutes saw everyone working together as team against a strong Wilmslow side who were big and fast. Undeterred, everyone started to tackle with a spirit and a desire to defeat an arch enemy. There was good running from Charlie Rogerson and James Barry which resulted in a good try from James. Despite some good defensive work from Stephen Lynch and Harry Broady Wilmslow were able to use their fast pace and score in reply. They then followed this up with another try. Not dispirited everyone pulled together and after some good mauling and rucking Megan Standring was able to pull the score level, and that was how it finished.

2nd Quarter: Sandbach 10 – Wilmslow 0 (Sandbach 20 – Wilmslow 10)

Team: Robert Coggon, Nathan Norwood, Joe Jackson, Joe Stock, Anthony Dowell, Alastair Thompson, Thomas Stakes, Chris Jackson, Dominic Evans, Danny Owen, Sam Harding

Following on from the 1st quarter saw Sandbach defending the quagmire end again. The training before the game seemed to have stuck in the minds of everyone with good rucking being seen, actually driving over and the mauling saw the ball moving back to any number of “scrum halves”. Danny Owen opened the scoring with a good run after some great smuggling of the ball out of a maul by Thomas Stakes. Wilmslow piled on the pressure but great tackling by Anthony Dowell, Dominic Evans and Robert Coggon ensured that the defensive line wasn’t breached. Joe Jackson then managed to get his hands on the ball and went on a run that covered most of the pitch, beat practically every Wilmslow player and even some Sandbach ones, before scoring a try. After that the defensive held out to bring the first half to a close.

3rd Quarter: Sandbach 0 – Wilmslow 5 (Sandbach 20 – Wilmslow 15)

Team: Max Bonar-Law, Jake Armitage, George Hubbard, Stephen Lynch, Harry Broady, Megan Standring, James Barry, Loucas Thomas-Garratt, George Beal, Charlie Rogerson.

With Nigel coaching from behind the line the team responded by giving their all. George Hubbard was getting stuck into some good defensive work and the other George, George Beal, had a couple of mazy runs, confusing a lot of players but then being stopped short of the try line. Jake Armitage and Loucas Thomas-Garratt made decisive tackles in keeping out a determined Wilmslow offensive, but it was not to be as Wilmslow launched a counter attack to score. Heads did not go down and with Max Bonar-Law driving forward, supported by Charlie Rogerson, Stephen Lynch and James Barry it looked like a score was only seconds away. Unfortunately after being awarded a penalty five metres from the Wilmslow line the referee said that the quarter would end when the ball next went dead. James Barry took the ball and despite valiant pushing, shoving and throwing everything against the maul by Sandbach, Wilmslow somehow managed to push the ball over the touch line.

4th Quarter: Sandbach 20 – Wilmslow 5 (final score: Sandbach 40 – Wilmslow 20)

Team: Robert Coggon, Nathan Norwood, Joe Jackson, Joe Stock, Anthony Dowell, Alastair Thompson, Thomas Stakes, Chris Jackson, Dominic Evans, Danny Owen, Sam Harding

Before this quarter started the team decided that there was no way they were going to be defeated. The team spirit was on a real high and from the first ball movement it was all one way rugby. Danny Owen once again opened the scoring using his pace to great effect and this was followed by Thomas Stakes once again smuggling the ball out of a maul and fooling everybody by running into the acres of space available to score. The one opportunity that Wilmslow took to move into the Sandbach final third of the pitch resulted in a score for them. But then everyone pulled together again. Nathan Norwood, Joe Stock and Alastair Thompson made life difficult for Wilmslow by stopping everything that came their way, and Sam chased the ball all over the pitch and made important tackles and passes. Then Joe Jackson decided it was time for another one of those runs, same result - another try. But try of the day went to the final score. Chris Jackson got involved in a maul, got his hands on the ball and was like a lad possessed as he pulled and ripped that ball out and then nothing was going to stop him scoring after running half the pitch. When the final whistle went the whole team celebrated but gave Wilmslow a good cheer and pats on the back down the “tunnel”.

Pride was at stake for everybody as Wilmslow are always one of those must beat teams, and today was the day when a lot of players believed in their ability, played as a team and got the reward they deserved. Rucking with people going over and pushing the opponents out of the way happened, mauling with working the ball back happened, support was never too far away and when the ball was passed down the line there was actually space for people to run into. A good crowd of parents were witness to a very good display
