Sandbach 67 - Congleton 0

Sat 25 September 2004

Up until this point both Sandbach and Congleton were unbeaten in the league. Congleton having two very good results 51-14 and 52-20. So Sandbach knew that they were in for a good game. There were one or two replacements from the previous week, with Julian Spears coming down from the second team and John Shaw stepping in at scrum half. Colts Gareth Jervis and Mike Egglestone keeping their place from the previous week. The game being especially special for Mike Egglestone as he was up against his dad. (Mum was on the line to see that fair play prevailed.) With the Cricket season over Richard Pickford was able to take over control of the team.

Sandbach started the game strongly and quickly put their stamp on the game, which was to get the ball out to their backs as quick as possible. This paid dividends as Martin Beecher ended the day with a six try tally. The last time that Sandbach had scored six tries against Congleton was when Steve Seddon was captain and this was by a young colt by the name of Mark Queto.

Martin Vernon at hooker had a great game, getting around the park, along with Sandbach’s back row, in the scrums youngster Gareth Jervis held his own admirably. In the back row, the experience of Julian spears and Steve Marchant paid off as Steve went over to score.

Congleton suffered a set back when two of their players collided, and by half time they were down to 13 men. The league rules state that no team shall have more than a one-man advantage so Chris Howell gave up his position on the wing.

Congleton started the second half with renewed vigour but after ten minutes as Sandbach had brought on Fresh legs in the guise of Richard Astles and Richard Pickford the pressure began to tell and Captain Richard Pickford crossed the line to score in his first game of the season. Chris Watson took up kicking duties.

As their heads dropped Congleton let Sandbach have more and more of the ball, and fly half Mark read surprised everyone with his change of pace, which open the way for Martin Beecher.

Team: Gareth Jervis, Martin Vernon, Andy Maddock (Rich Astles), Steve Jones, Ian Lovell, (Richard Pickford Capt.) Steve Marchant, Mike Egglestone, Julian Spears, John Shaw, Mark Read, Lee Thompson, Frank Boughey, Martin Beecher, Chris Howell, Chris Watson
