Sandbach 32 - Buxton 12

Sat 22 January 2005

After the mauling against Norhwich, last weekend several of the third team stalwarts were unable to play in this important match against Buxton, missing players included, Colin Stent, Steve Marchant, Stuart Milward, Mark Reed and props Steve Roe, and Andy Maddock. But this meant that prop Dave Pipe could play alongside his father Robin Pipe, the other father son partnership being the Jones.

Sandbach were quickly in front as Carey Prout crossing the line as Sandbach won a scrum against the head within Buxton’s 22m Adrian wood quickly passed the ball to stand in stand off Carey Prout who crashed over the line to score.

From the restart Sandbach again put Buxton under pressure, as in their own 22m their full back first went one way then the other before finally being clattered. Gareth Caen picked the ball up and scored.

Buxton came back at Sandbach and pinned them in their own half, flankers Jason Keeble and Junior Colt Gareth Jervis keeping them at bay with some tenacious tackling.

Carey Prout was again on the scorecard as Sandbach took a quick line out in Buxton’s 22m and the ball was again quickly passed out for Carey to cross the line. Shortly afterwards Sandbach were down to 14 men as Dave Pipe naivety showed as he was sin binned for going over the top and killing the ball. This meant that Gareth Jervis had to move back to prop whilst he was off the pitch.

At half time Sandbach made one change as Senior Colt Dan Faulkner came on for Robin Pipe. In addition within minutes of the second half Sandbach 4th team flanker Joe Patinson had to come on to play at tight head.

Sandbach extended their lead as they scored from a breakaway, the ball being kicked behind Buxton defence and Ray Jones chased the ball up, kicked it once before being picking it up and running with it the length of the pitch then scored under the posts. Shortly afterwards Ray was replaced by Tom Hughes.

The next Sandbach player to score was captain Richard Pickford crashed over the line, after some good support work. Chris Watson converted the try for what was his fourth conversion of the game, on top of a penalty kick.

Buxton then decided to change tack and started to move the ball with their heavier forwards through the centre of the park, for this they were rewarded with two trys one of which was converted. During the last ten minutes of the match they were camped on Sandbach’s line. But Sandbach’s defence kept them out, as they were either head up over the line or dropped the ball over the line.

Next weekend Sandbach are away to Bowden,

Dave Pipe, Andy Ennis, Gareth Caen, Steve Jones, Robin Pipe, Jason Keeble, Gareth Jervis, Richard Pickford (Capt.) Adrian Wood, Carey Prout, Lee Thompson, Ray Jones, Andy Green, Paul Kennedy, Chris Watson.

Replacements: Joe Patinson, Dan Faulkner, Nick Brown (not used), Tom Hughes, James (Andy Green’s brother in law)
