Sandbach Under 12s undefeated but go out of Cheshire Cup
A great effort from all of the squad saw some superb rugby from Sandbach when we visited Caldy RFC to defend the Cheshire Cup. Many thanks to Caldy for a good day out.
There will be no names in the reports as this was a squad performance and the try scorers would not have scored without the efforts of their team mates. The squad was: Tom Wardle, Sam Thompson, James Stops, Jake Standring, Max Smith, Jack Robinson, Elliot Moore, William Jepson, Kurt Hurlstone-Johnson, Luke Gross, Joseph Cooper, William Bordill, Luke Blagbrough, Connor Benson, Joe Barton, Alistair Allen.
We were drawn in Pool A, an interesting group consisting of ourselves, Congleton, Winnington Park and Wilmslow, remember those names for when we get to the bottom of the report.
Congleton – the Sandbach team started on fire and quickly established dominance in all areas of the game to score 8 tries in 14 minutes and concede none.
Winnington Park – having lost their opening game, Park needed to win this one and it showed however with a try in each half, Sandbach closed the game out again without conceding a try. There were some really big hits in this game from both sides and injuries started to tell.
Wilmslow – with both sides already through to the knock out stages this game could have been a dead rubber, however what we saw was in a number of neutral observers' opinions, the finest game of the day. Massive hits, massive defence, great structure and attacking flair from both sides for an incredibly exciting nil all draw, echoing the final from last year.
Sandbach topped the group by virtue of have scored more tries than Wilmslow and conceded less.
The quarter final was against Lymm and the team turned in a great performance to win by three tries to nil.
The semi final was against Altrincham Kersal, exactly as it was last year. Unfortunately the Sandbach team started slowly in this one and only woke up after conceding the crucial first try. Sandbach then equalised but needed to score a second as AK had scored first. We crossed their line on three more occasions but were held up and as the clock ticked down there just weren’t enough seconds to score again. Well done to AK on a good match and getting through.
Sandbach were unbeaten but out.
Wilmslow beat AK in the final by 10 points to nil and Winnington Park beat Congleton in the final of the plate competition, so we topped the group that had 3 finalists in it, close, but not close enough.
A big well done goes to all the squad and many thanks to the coaches and parents who roared them on.
