Sandbach 24 - Congleton 5

Sat 16 April 2005

With Rich Pickford unavailable Robin Pipe took over the reins for the penultimate game of the season against local rivals Congleton. With Senior Colts team manager Roger Egglestone turning out for the opposition there were many of his charges keen to play to show what they could do (and give him a good kicking, including son, Mikey).
The perrrennial problem of too few backs persisted, so Simon Price, Andy Pipe and Jamie Holland donned the 12, 13 and 14 shirts.
The first half was hard fought and Sandbach turned round at the interval with a slender 7-5 lead thanks to an Andy Pipe try, the prop-cum-centre kicking through and collecting the rebound off the post to score one of the scruffiest tries of the season.
The second half was more relaxed and played with more of a festival atmosphere, with plenty of banter between the teams (especially from Dan Faulkner, why Roger didn’t send one through from the second row to shut him up is beyond me!).
Sandbach’s second half scores came from scrum half Rob Leese who went on a mazey individual run, stand-off Ryan Phelps who finally sobered up and decided he could run after all, and Gaz Caen who finished off a move started by a Jamie Holland from the wing with a scintillating run. Conversions came from Ryan Phelps and Eggy who was not going to miss out on the scoring.
Finally thanks to Alec Burton who stood in to referee at the last minute to give his own unique interpretation of the laws of the game, not to mention a running commentary worthy of Bill McLaren, and Madog who fell on his sword and turned out for the 4ths who were short of a front row.
Next week could be a struggle with the Senior Colts withdrawing because of their Cup Final on Sunday, so lets get all the regulars back in harness for one last time away at Heaton Moor.
