Sandbach 10 - Chester 80 |
Sun 16 January 2000
Chester are renowned as one of the top sides in Cheshire so for their visit to Bradwall Road on Sunday Sandbach needed to be at full strength. Unfortunately due to a combination of flu, ski-ing holidays and injuries a weakened Sandbach side took the field against their visitors.
The first half was one way traffic. Despite good forward play Sandbach had no answer to Chester's fast running back line and the vistors ran up a total of 44 points before the half time whistle.
The second half was not quite so one sided as although Chester put on another 36 points Sandbach managed two good tries of their own from centres Mike Huss & Jason Ashwin. Unfortunately both were from wide positions giving too difficult conversion opportunities for kickers Rollings & Greenhalgh.
Although out played for much of the game Sandbach competed well - particularly in the scrum where John Ogdon was making his debut at loose head in the absence of Ollie Lawrence - and had much to be pleased about in the manner in which they fought on until the end.
Sandbach - Gooch, Henry, Ogdon, Faulkner, Wagstaff, Keirnan, McCracken, Graveney, Hodgkinson, Greenhalgh, Ashwin, Huss, Rollings, Bowyer, Eyers.
