Sandbach 17 - Leigh 55 |
Sun 31 October 99
Top Lancashire side Leigh were the visitors to Bradwall Road on Sunday 31st October.
Leigh are a strong team in all departments and although Sandbach played well they were convincingly beaten by the strong running team play of their classy opposition.
Sandbach welcomed back prop Richard Wilson (switching Chris Gooch to flanker to accommodate him in their front row) but with Dan Faulkner missing due to family commitments were forced to play No 8 Dan Stubbs at second row. Also returning after some weeks away was flanker Ben Read who came on in the second half for Tom Kiernan. While by no means an experimental pack the various positional changes did cause some confusion at times and the extra weight of Leigh's forwards caused Sandbach difficulties in set play.
Sandbach's back division was however at full strength. Fast running centres Jason Ashwin & Matt Walton caused Leigh difficulties whenever the opportunity to break presented itself but although wingers Mike Huss & Andy Rollings were frequently in the game they got little from the strong Leigh defence. Mike Eyers at full-back had another very good game.
Sandbach scorers: Rollings (2 tries an a conversion), Ashwin (try).
Sandbach - Lawrence, Henry, Wilson, Stubbs, Wagstaff, Gooch, Kiernan (Read), Graveney, Hodgkinson, Greenhalgh, Ashwin, Walton, Rollings, Huss, Eyers
