Period 1 Sandbach 15 : 5
In the first period Winnington Park and Sandbach put out strong 15's to compete for the first rugby spoils of 2013. The early exchanges showed both teams to be suffering from holiday relaxations, as a desire to play running rugby resulted in a number of dropped midfield passes. As can typically happen for the Bradwall Road boys, Winnington Park were the first to break the deadlock with a try scored out wide - the try went unconverted. Earlier in the season, this could have resulted in a number of tries for the opposition, but the improving attitude and skills of the Sandbach boys enabled them to reply with three unconverted tries. One from the marauding prop and two from their improving second row. Forward play did have a significant role in the scores, but the backs were also showing a significant contribution to attack and defence, with some of the best passing seen this season.
Period 2 Sandbach 5 : Winnington Park 7
The second period showed an improved passing game from both teams and the low number of scores confirmed the excellent tackling from both teams on such a large pitch. After a well worked try out wide for their outside half, Sandbach's game plan took a backward step with the sinbinning of their second row. It is credit to the defensive organisation of the Sandbach 14 that they only conceded one converted try in the 10 minute period with reduced numbers.
Period 3 Sandbach 5 : Winnington Park 28
The final period gave both teams the opportunity to make a number of changes to their on field 15's. in the first few minute of the period, Sandbach exchanged tries, with the Sandbach prop powering over from short distance - once again the score went unconverted. Although Sandbach were able to gain strong field and penalty position on at least three occasions, a combination of poor communication and lack of support play lost the initiative. In contrast, Winnington Park took advantage of the situation and responded with a further three converted tries.
Tries - Tom W, Owen (2), Kieran, Joe.
over the first 40 minutes the fixture result was Sandbach 20 Winnington Park 12
However the excellent third 20 minute period by Winnington Park saw them take the points honours for the day Sandbach 25 Winnington Park 40
Thanks to Winnington Park for an excellent morning of rugby and we look forward to playing you again soon.
Positives from today were the continued improvement of passing, tackling, support play and positional play especially in the first two periods. We have to continue this through all periods of game and we have to learn to make more use of penalty opportunities. Something to work on in training sessions.
