Sandbach 15 - Winnington Park 5 |
Sun 18 March 2001
Possibly the best all round performance of the season in this somewhat stop start year. Both teams were evenly matched for strength and physique, but Sandbach had the edge when it came to recycling the ball and supporting on the break. The most pleasing aspect of the game, from the home teams perspective was strength and commitment in the tackle. Of particular note was the rock solid defence shown by the forwards. WP's biggest player was brought to a halt at each restart, by the team-work and timing of the forwards, who not only stopped him, but on several occasions took the ball and gained some valuable metres in attack. A great performance by all players who should be really proud of themselves.
Sportingly, WP, (having brought only 9 players), were up for a second match, against a Sandbach 9 containing 6 fresh pairs of legs. This game was a little scrappier, probably down to tiredness in one team and a slight lack of co-ordination in the other. That said, there were some positive runs from both sides, and one or two passages of neat and skillful passing. The game was edged by Sandbach 20 points to 15, which just about reflects the game.
