Sandbach 5 - Helsby 41 Sun 25 November 2012 After an early pitch inspection the pitch was passed playable but only after it had been given a good forking. Full credit to the coaches who gave out valuable instructions on the best way to use a garden fork. The lads were fired up for what they knew was going to be a very tough game in the first round of the Cheshire cup. Our pack put early pressure on the Helsby defence who had a strong wind at their backs. The forwards controlled the ball and drove the Helsby pack deep into their own half, but when the opportunities came our way to kick for touch we were unable to take advantage. Once Helsby started to make use of the strong wind they took control of the game by using their backs to exploit the spaces they had created out wide to open the scoring. The lead was extended with 2 further tries being scored, one which was directly the result of some poor tackling by the Sandbach defence. At half time the score was 29-0 this did not reflect the possession of play but it do show how best to take your opportunities when they come your way.  The second half continued much the same as the first, with Helsby running in 2 further tries, but full credit to the lads in green ( or by now black) for continuing to battle to the end, their battling spirit was rewarded when G Owen scored from close range. Full credit to both sides for an entertaining game played in very difficult conditions. The game was played in a good spirit and it was good to see some old faces back at the club they started at. The better team on the day deserved to win and good luck to Helsby for the rest of the competition.  The coaches are aware of improvements we need to make but the lads commitment and spirit cannot be doubted, with our injured players due to return shortly I am sure the results will improve.
