Lymm U14’s 54 Sandbach U14’s 25
Is it wrong for two men to go to the cinema together?
The reason for this question is that our sons wonder (at least mine does) what we talk about on the sideline whilst they are training. The question illustrates the deep philosophical thinking that goes on and the intense debate that follows (as well as the hurt and pain of rejection- Martin!!!)
Anyway back to the rugby….
On a brisk Cheshire morning we assembled for an early kick off...players looking dapper in club shirts, ties, chinos and beats (get down with the kids init)
The game began in sensational fashion with Josh Brookes scything through the opposition to score under the posts. Our cup overflowed when James Finucan picked up a Lymm knock on to race 70 metres for a second try.
However Lymm fought back and scored 2 of their own tries to end the first third tied at 14 all. Into the second third and our forwards rampaged again. The front row of Archie, Monty and Christian were awesome, ably supported by Tom and Jack (jac, jac, jac) in the boiler room and the marauding work of David, Joe and Ollie in the back row. Luke and Tom set the backs off time and again and James and Josh worked manfully to make gaps and defend. Harry and Matt on either wing played their part and Jordan at full back was having his usual majestic game (is there a better pound for pound tackler) We took the lead for the second time as Monty dived as a graceful salmon over the line (by Wednesday it’ll be a 35 metre run!!).
However things then began to go Pete Tong, as Lymm kicked into gear. To sum the rest of the second and third periods up we were second best as Lymm went from 7 points down to 25 points in front. We did reply once in the third period with a superb run and offload by debutant Jake Meredith to send Luke over from 30 metres. Subs came and all contributed their best, Alexes Walker and Wardle as well as Cieran added their individual talents to the match.
As Professor Pickles (so called due to his encyclopaedic knowledge of the laws of the game and of the tackle area..oh er vicar!!!) put it afterwards, when we were good we were very good but when we were bad, oh dear. At this point I must also address some scurrilous rumours put about by artisan supporters that I am trying to gain favour of certain management staff by compliments. Can I state that the rumour that I am expecting Professor Pickles love child are wrong (my shape is due to excess yeast in my diet).
Anyway the lads cannot be faulted for their efforts and there is plenty to work upon. In general a disappointing end to what promised to be an excellent showing, but take nothing away from an excellent Lymm side that ran out worthy winners.
Finally congratulations to the U14’s for their help in solving a local crime. There had been a spate of charity bag thefts in the local area. The lads alerted the police after Wednesday and Sunday training. Police said that Mr Dolan was co operating and had returned the items after training. (Just remember I have the power to edit- but will leave it for now and bide my time-MD)
