Stoke 60 - Sandbach 12 |
Sun 27 February 2000
A Sandbach side weakened by half term holiday commitments and a couple of injuries travelled down the M6 to play Stoke.
Playing against a strong team Sandbach were also hampered in the first half by a fierce wind and adverse weather conditions which worsened as the match wore on. A couple of early tries by the home team put them in the ascendancy but a fine counter attack involving second row Dan Faulkner and centre Jason Ashwin saw winger Andy Rollings sprint half the length of the pitch to score for the visitors.
Although down 28 - 5 at half time Sandbach felt that with the wind in their favour in the second half the match was anything but lost. However loose defence saw Stoke break through the Sandbach line a couple of times before Sandbach woke themselves up from the half time interval.
It seemed that despite good Sandbach pressure they were not to score again. The luck of the bounce went with the hosts on a number of occasions before Sandbach found an opening. From solid forward power on the hosts 10 metre line the ball found its way to centre Jason Ashwin who broke two tackles before releasing stand off Chris Greenhalgh to score. Andy Rollings converted.
Sandbach - Caen, Henry, Lawrence, Faulkner, Wagstaff, Kiernan, Walton, Stubbs, Hodgkinson, Greenhalgh, Ashwin, Rollings, Huss, Williams, Eyers
