Sandbach 31 - Mold 60 |
Sun 6 February 2000
The visitors to Bradwall Road on Sunday 6th February were Mold. Sandbach had never played Mold at this age group before so were unaware of the abilities of this team from North Wales. Mold proved to be daunting opposition with a strong pack, fast running forwards and a good kicker.
Kicking downhill in the first half, Mold started the stronger running in 3 early tries (one converted) before any response from their hosts. A fine break on the Mold 10 metre line from Sandbach centre Jason Ashwin saw him over for a well deserved try. Andy Rollings converted but it remained very much one way traffic in the first half as Mold ran in a further 3 tries (one converted) before the interval.
The early part of the second half continued in this vein with Mold increasing their advantage with four more tries (three of which were converted).
At 7 - 60 Sandbach looked to be dead and buried but suddenly they found themselves back in the match.
First a well worked move saw Ashwin in for his second try (unconverted). Then defending deep in their own half the pack managed to release scrum half Tom Hodgkinson in space. Fine interchange between forwards and backs saw Sandbach travel virtually the entire length of the field with No 8 Dan Stubbs managing to scramble his way over the line for a well earned try (unconverted). Sandbach continued to apply the pressure and winger Andy Rollings added a further try which he converted himself.
In the dying minutes of the game a quick tap penalty from Tom Hodgkinson, awarded for answering back, released centre Jason Ashwin to drive himself over the line under the posts. Rollings converted to make the final score a much more respectable 31 - 60.
