Sandbach 46 - Walsall 17 Sat 16 October 99 The first fixture between these two clubs proved to be a fine spectacle with the lighter, faster Sandbach side taking the honours. When Walsall opened the scoring with a simple try from their huge centre Sandbach had to compose themselves and work their way back into the game, which they of course did. Slowly but surely, especially from set pieces, the home forwards began to take control. With a steady supply of good ball half backs Grimson and Clancy began to dictate the game and the speed of Sandbach was too much for the visitors. Great hands and confident running from the Sandbach backs bought 2 tries to fullback Money, 2 to outside centre Ravenscroft and one to inside centre Flowers. In every instance the Wallsall defence had no answer to the pace and lines of running. The best try of the match and Ravenscroft’s first was a super dummy scissor move between Clancy and Flowers that took in the whole defence and left the home team centre with an easy run in. At that point the Walsall coach on the touch line commented, “These lads have never played against stuff like this before, we’re in trouble here!” The Sandbach forwards once again proved that they are part of this team with huge strong breaks from Farmer, who score two good tries for his efforts and a typically gritty performance from hooker Dey who shared Man of the Match with full-back Money. Next week Sandbach are at home to Wrexham U 15s and are anticipating a much tougher match from this strong Welsh club.
