Wilmslow 54 - Sandbach 15 |
Sun 12 December 99
This was very much a game of two halves. A very well drilled Wilmslow U14 side dominated the first half and effectively had the match won by half time having scored 6 unconverted tries to their visitors none. Sandbach in the meantime had lost full-back Mike Eyers to a broken nose from an accidental clash in a tackle.
In the second half Wilmslow eased off a little and although they scored another four tries (two converted) Sandbach came into the game strongly with three well worked tries of their own.
The first was very much a solo effort from winger Andy Rollings. He received the ball on the half way line from centre Jason Ashwin and set off on a mazy run which saw him over in the corner. Unfortunately the tight angle made it a difficult conversion opportunity but Rollings effort was only just wide of the left hand post.
Sandbach's second try came from a similar attacking move in the same corner involving Ashwin & Rollings but on this occasion neither could make the line due to strong Wilmslow defence. Wilmslow seemed to have cleared the danger but hesitancy in their defence allowed Sandbach hooker Ewan Henry to punce on a loose ball over the Wilmslow try line. Chris Greenhalgh was unable to convert the difficult conversion attempt.
Sandbach's third try - again in the same corner - saw Rollings get his second of the match again as a result of great handling by Jason Ashwin. On this occasion Rollings kick had the right line but not quite the distance.
Sandbach's pack competed well in the set scrum but lost too many line outs to the well organised Wilmslow front eight. Organisation was the major difference between the sides.
Sandbach - Lawrence, Henry, Gooch, Faulkner, Wagstaff, Kiernan (Jeffreys), Caen. Stubbs, Hodgkinson, Greenhalgh, Ashwin, Walton. Rollings, Castrie, Eyers (McCracken).
