Macclesfield 20 - Sandbach 30 |
Sun 7 January 2001
After a 3-week gap over the Christmas period both sides gave an exiting demonstration of mini rugby. Played on a pitch, which in parts was deep enough in mud to have some of the younger players needing a snorkel, this did nothing to slow down the pace of the game.
The game was most notable for the use by both teams of the width of the pitch and the creation and use of space. This resulted in some great scores by both teams, which had both sets of parents cheering enthusiastically. The final result in favour of Sandbach was never a foregone conclusion as the home team had repeatedly come back to level the score, and were particularly good on the break with very quick passing of the ball in a tackle situation.
In the end, the Sandbach defence remained disciplined and kept Macclesfield out, forcing a turn-over near the end of the game from which the final try was scored.
Try scorers: Moore, Jepson (3), Barton (2).
Macclesfield 35 - Sandbach 30
A further game was arranged against Macclesfield, where Sandbach continued to let the newer players have priority on the field. This proved a stronger test than the previous match, against the much faster and better-organised home team.
A half time score of 20 - 10 to Macclesfield reflected the difficulty in defending against the faster opponents, but both the Sandbach tries were well worked with the ball being moved into space.
A couple of tactical changes at half time increased the strength of the team and the second half went in favour of Sandbach who were now better able to deal with the Macclesfield attack. Our own attack also caused increased problems for the home team with more direct running and quicker support allowing the second half to be 3 tries to 2 in Sandbach's favour.
Try scorers: Jepson, Sharp, Robinson (3), Stops

UNDER 7's MATCH REPORT
MACCLESFIELD 35 SANDBACH 45.
A well drilled and confident Sandbach team always had the upper-hand throughout a game which was played at a slower than usual pace due to the heavy ground conditions. Intelligent Sandbach play enabled them to take advantage of the drier parts of the pitch, and by passing along the line were able exploit gaps in the Macclesfield defence. They were able to build on a half-time lead of 20-15, to emerge confident victors at 45-35.
Paul Moore.
